The term sheriff is a contraction of "shirereeve", an expression which comes from medieval England and which is appointed responsible for justice in a county. It is currently the public authority of police and justice in force in several Anglo-Saxon countries: Great Britain, the United States and Canada.

The first settlers took the figure of the sheriff with them to the American continent to maintain order in the new populations. At the time of the gold rush, their presence became more and more necessary, and to distinguish who gave the law instead, a badge was placed on the chest, a recognizable symbol of rank and authority.

At first, many badges were in the shape of an oval or a shield, later they began to be represented with a 5-point star, a symbol associated with the flag of the United States. Since then, the sheriff's badge has evolved and can be a 5, 6, or 7 point star.

Most sheriffs now use a star plate, while police officers use an oval shield or badge. Federal agencies frequently use plates with an eagle on the shield.
